Genesis 1:2-5

Genesis 1:2-5

The earth was unformed and void, darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the water. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. So there was evening, and there was morning, one day.

The first description of earth’s condition was classified in three forms

  • unformed “תֹ֙הוּ֙” (ṯō·hū) – signifying confusion and waste
  • void – “וָבֹ֔הוּ” (wā·ḇō·hū) – a state of emptiness
  • darkness – “וְחֹ֖שֶׁךְ” (choshek) – obscurity distress and dread

The earth was not in the condition fit for living creatures and life forms

God in His power and is the source of life induced life on earth

On the first day of this specific creation work on earth God created light however on closer examination of Scripture the Sun and Moon was not created on the first day but later on the fourth day!

So what kind of light was created on the first day?

The Scripture text for light created the first day “א֑וֹר” (owr) better understood as illumination, enlightenment, which separated the darkness (obscurity, distress, dread, confusion, waste, emptiness, lack of enlightenment) that saturated earth.

Such separation established a known God’s pattern of division between the righteous and wicked we will find throughout Scripture.

When God redeem His people the first condition is separation and division

Those who believe, trust and obey the truth of God’s teaching are separated from those who do the opposite

So on the first day God redeemed earth from darkness and chaos through separating darkness and creating His righteous light
